What is the Field of Education classification?

Choosing your field of education is one of the most important tasks you will have to do before you apply to a higher education provider. The field of education is the subject or discipline you will study in greatest depth during your course.

The Field of Education Classification is a classification system generally used by Australian universities and providers to describe higher education courses, specialisations and units of study.

The main purpose of the classification is to ensure courses, specialisations and units of study with the same or similar vocational emphasis are classified to the same field of education. The classification uses the concept of vocational emphasis for coding courses and specialisations.

Using the field of education description

The field of education descriptions can be used to:
  1. select a broad field or general interest
  2. consider areas of specialisation or specific interest within the broad field.

The descriptions are only indicative of the field of education but can provide a useful tool to find out what a field of education may be about, what may be studied in this field.

Prospective students who have not yet selected a course of study or refined their choice can use the field of education descriptions:

  • as a research tool to narrow their field of interest
  • as a way to cross-match course codes at a higher education provider (provider) in their field of interest
  • to identify previously unfamiliar study areas that may not have been considered.
