About Edith Cowan University
Edith Cowan University (ECU)
is a dynamic and progressive university, service-focused and international in its outlook. At the forefront of education for 100 years, ECU is Western Australia's second largest university. Working to its three defining themes of Service, Professionalism and Enterprise, ECU is the market leader in courses for the knowledge professions: nursing, education, business, information technology, communications and multimedia, regional professional studies, aviation, the performing arts, justice studies and psychology.
The University's strategic location in Perth, Australia's western gateway to Asia and the Indian Ocean region, has resulted in ECU developing a strong focus on overseas activities. More than 4000 international students originating from more than 90 countries study with ECU each year. This includes the off-shore delivery of a variety of courses in a number of countries, student and staff exchange programs with other universities, joint research activities, international consultancies and individual academic links.
ECU offers a wide choice of study locations. The Perth metropolitan suburbs are home to three campuses in Joondalup, Mount Lawley and Churchlands, and there is a regional campus at the city of Bunbury (200km south-west of Perth). By 2007 activities at the Churchlands Campus will be consolidated to the Joondalup and Mount Lawley campuses. The Joondalup Campus is part of the Joondalup Learning Precinct, a cluster that incorporates a university, a police academy and a TAFE college. At Joondalup, learning pathways between ECU, the West Coast College of TAFE and the Western Australian Police Academy allow the easy transfer of credits so students can gain the most suitable qualification for their career needs.
ECU offers more than 300 progressive study programs at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The University works closely with private and public sector organisations, locally and overseas, in designing its study programs. An emphasis on conducting research with industry partners in areas such as e-commerce, micro-electronics engineering, police studies, education, ecosystem
management, palliative care and human services has seen ECU develop a lively applied research culture.
Number of Available Higher Education Places
In 2003, ECU had 15,889 places (EFTSU) (24,110 student numbers).
National Priority Places
In 2004, ECU received 25 regional nursing places (EFTSU), rising to 68 places after 4 years.
In 2005, ECU will receive 55 nursing places (EFTSL), rising to 150 in 2008.
In 2005, ECU will receive 45 teaching places (EFTSL), rising to 123 in 2008.
Additional support will be provided for areas identified by the Australian Government as National Priorities. Teaching and nursing have been identified as initial key areas of National Priority, to ensure an adequate supply of high quality graduates for Australia’s schools and hospitals. The figures above refer to additional National Priority places only and do not indicate the total number of nursing or teaching places offered by this provider.
