About James Cook University
James Cook University (JCU)
is the second oldest university in Queensland and offers excellence in teaching and research. Located in tropical northern Queensland, JCU’s main campuses are in Townsville and Cairns while smaller study centres are located in Mackay, Mount Isa and Thursday Island. With a student population of over 15,500, JCU is the university of choice for students from the region.
Over 300 undergraduate and postgraduate courses are available across a broad range of disciplines including the arts, business, engineering, creative arts, education, information technology, health sciences, law, medicine, social sciences, science and veterinary science.
JCU’s broad-based degrees are complemented by courses that reflect its distinctive location in the tropics, including marine sciences, tropical ecology, tropical agricultural science, public health and tropical medicine, tropical veterinary science, and indigenous Australian studies. Located alongside two World Heritage sites – the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and the rainforests of the Wet Tropics – JCU is renowned for its environmental science programs which include the study of tropical ecosystems and their conservation and management and natural products chemistry. JCU also excels in geology, engineering, psychology, tourism, rehabilitation sciences and anthropology and archaeology of northern Australia.
Students enjoy smaller class sizes, friendly campuses and a comprehensive range of support services that include study skills centres and learning advisers, a student mentor program and equity and disability resource services. JCU actively supports tertiary education for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and has one of the highest enrolments of indigenous students in Australia.
JCU is a member of Innovative Research Universities Australia.
