RMIT’s programs in TAFE and higher education have a strong professional and vocational orientation and aim to prepare graduates for employment and active citizenship. Strengths include:

• a commitment to pathways between education sectors and between education and work.

RMIT programs are delivered through three academic portfolios: Science, Engineering and Technology; Business; and Design and Social Context.  RMIT’s innovative teaching and learning culture is complemented by a strong commitment to research which delivers practical and relevant outcomes. 

The Science, Engineering and Technology Portfolio draws together RMIT’s expertise and experience in the sciences, health technologies, IT and engineering. It comprises ten schools, and its programs can be grouped under three themes:  Environment and sustainability, Health and wellbeing and Advanced technologies. They range from sustainable resource management and nursing through to biosciences and advanced manufacturing.

The Design and Social Context Portfolio encompasses RMIT’s renowned art, communication, design and social science disciplines and comprises eleven Schools. Areas of strength include Communications (linking idea to audience); Creative Arts (from traditional arts to digital); Design (in areas from architecture to fashion to products), Education and Social and Regional Development.

The Business Portfolio has an excellent reputation for delivering innovative and entrepreneurial programs and is composed of seven schools, encompassing Management, Accounting and Law, Marketing, Economics and Finance, and Business Information Technology disciplines. Developing areas of strength include entrepreneurship and supply chain management.  The Portfolio includes a Business TAFE school and a Graduate School of Business.

Number of Available Higher Education Places
In 2005, RMIT had 28,370 places (EFTSL) (34,107 student numbers).


RMIT is a dual Sector Provider and also delivered 11,571 TAFE and Foundation EFTSU (23,142 student numbers).  This gives a total of 39,941 EFTSU and 57,249 enrolments for 2005.


National Priority Places
For 2007, RMIT has received 80 new places in the fields of Civil Engineering, Social Work, Planning and Secondary Education.


Additional support will be provided for areas identified by the Australian Government as National Priorities. Teaching and nursing have been identified as initial key areas of National Priority, to ensure an adequate supply of high quality graduates for Australia’s schools and hospitals. The figures above refer to additional National Priority places only and do not indicate the total number of nursing or teaching places offered by this provider.
