About the University of Tasmania

The University of TasmaniaYou are now leaving Going to Uni is an institution of international standing.  Through its campuses at Hobart, Launceston and Burnie, UTAS exploits the very best of its unique environment and the Island’s natural and built resources to deliver quality higher education and research.

From the time it was founded in 1890 it has been pivotal to the development of Tasmania and Tasmanians.  But now its reach and impact extends across Australia and around the world.  Its internationally focused curriculum, its client-focused delivery and its cutting edge research place UTAS on the world stage.

The University of Tasmania has adopted the strategy of developing teaching and research of national and international significance in particular areas that provide a sustainable competitive edge for the University in the national higher education system.

The six University Theme Areas

  • Antarctic and Marine
  • Environment
  • Sustainable Primary Production
  • Frontier Technologies
  • Community, Place and Change
  • Population and Health

are an important element of the institution's approach to research and teaching. The themes represent areas of significant research strengths, and substantial teaching endeavours. They build on many of the foundational disciplines of knowledge and on the linkages between disciplines.

In 2006 the student population was over 18,000 students with more than 2,000 international students drawn from over 60 countries.  UTAS has off-shore programs in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, China, Indonesia, and New Zealand.  UTAS works with institutions around the world to offer students an international experience, with exchange arrangements in place with over 40 institutions throughout Europe, Asia and North America.

UTAS offers one of the widest range of courses in Australia (58 undergraduate courses) yet is small enough to provide a supportive and distinctive student experience.

Number of Available Higher Education Places
In 2007, UTAS plans to offer 13,800 fulltime places of which just under 10,000 are Commonwealth fully-funded places.

National Priority Places
In 2007, UTAS will be enrolling 650 EFTSL in undergraduate Nursing and over 1500 EFTSL in undergraduate Teaching.

Additional support will be provided for areas identified by the Australian Government as National Priorities. Teaching and nursing have been identified as initial key areas of National Priority, to ensure an adequate supply of high quality graduates for Australia’s schools and hospitals. The figures above refer to additional National Priority places only and do not indicate the total number of nursing or teaching places offered by this provider.
