About Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS)
The Australian Film Television and Radio School
(AFTRS) began in 1973 as part of the Commonwealth Government’s strategy to promote the development of Australian cultural activity, including the expansion of training in the arts and the media. Since that time there has been an outstanding growth in the production and distribution of Australian films, television programs, radio broadcasting and, most recently, digital media.
AFTRS provides a program of postgraduate award courses in film, television, digital media and radio as well as a national short course program in all areas of film and broadcast production. Although AFTRS’ award courses have postgraduate status, a relevant undergraduate degree is not a prerequisite. Industry experience is always a significant consideration.
Flexible, contemporary accommodation with easy access to the working industry is crucial for AFTRS to maximize the impact of its training and education programs. In May 2008, AFTRS moved in to its brand new purpose built facility at Moore Park in Sydney's east. The new site is in close proximity to Fox Studios, Animal Logic, Soundfirm, Trackdown, Vision Bytes, Spectrum Films and other national and international production companies and will provide opportunities for AFTRS students to interact and collaborate with other practitioners and the wider community.
AFTRS policy is to direct its education towards those people with demonstrated creative potential, clear ability and commitment. Applications for all courses are highly competitive because places are limited. Applicants will have to demonstrate some pre-existing knowledge or experience as well as clear training objectives.
Award courses are open only to Australian citizens, permanent residents, New Zealand residents and holders of humanitarian visas.
In 2008, AFTRS will be offering a limited range of award courses in Sydney to allow time for the move. An expanded program of Graduate Certificate courses will be offered in other locations around the country.
Number of Available Higher Education Places
In 2008 there will be 287 fee paying places in award courses, including 43 available only through Distance Education, 147 available in cities outside Sydney and 32 Sydney-based places available only to continuing students.
