About the National Institute of Dramatic Art
The National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA)
is Australia's national theatre school, a centre of excellence in training for theatre, film and television. NIDA provides professional training at a tertiary level for people wishing to work as actors, stage managers, designers, scenery, costume or property makers, lighting and sound designers, directors and voice & movement teachers.
NIDA provides full-time training courses for a Bachelor of Dramatic Art in Acting, Design, Production or Production Crafts, specialising inCostume or Properties. Other full-time options include the Master in Dramatic Art or Graduate Diploma of Dramatic Art, both in three streams (Directing, Voice Studies or Movement Studies) and the Advanced Diploma of Dramatic Art in Scenery Construction.
NIDA graduates have won well over 600 international and national awards. NIDA prepares people to work in many different areas of the arts entertainment industry, both in Australia and overseas, working in film, video, television, theatre, musicals, opera, dance, corporate events, special occasions (such as the Olympics, Australia Day celebrations, New Year's Eve) and multimedia.
Entry to all NIDA courses is by audition or interview, conducted in every capital city throughout Australia (except Canberra) in November each year. NIDA accepts students from all Australian states and territories, as well as a limited number of overseas students. There are approximately 170 full time students at NIDA each year.

Open Days
Information evenings will be held in various interstate centres around mid 2008; NIDA holds an Open Day in Sydney every second year. The next Open Day will be on 31 May 2008.

Apply Direct to NIDA.
Applications for 2009 open 1 July 2008 and close 30 September 2008.
Applications are submitted direct to NIDA. Admission to NIDA is by audition or interview.

Minimum Entrance Requirements
Entry to NIDA is by audition or interview (see How to Apply). The Higher School Certificate or equivalent award from the final year of secondary school is the minimum required educational qualification, although this condition may be waived in expetional circumstances.
Students in the undergraduate courses must have reached the age of 18 before the commencement of the course (in exceptional circumctances this may be waived). Students in the postgraduate courses must have reached the age of 22 before the commencement of the course (in exceptional circumstances this may be waived).

Scholarship Information
There are a limited number of NIDA scholarships available through the generosity of donors to NIDA and bequests. Scholarhsips are not available for tuition fees but provide a small contribution to assist with living costs
Scholarship funds are allocated to second and third year students as a priority. Scholarships are not normally available to first year students, students of the one year courses or international students.
