About the University of Wollongong
The University of Wollongong (UOW)
was founded over 55 years ago by the independent spirit of the Illawarra region, by staff and students who wanted an educational institution that served the needs of local communities and industry. This history has given UOW the strength to carve a distinctive identity among Australian and international universities.
Today UOW spans over two campuses and four education centres, as well as to the University of Wollongong in Dubai, the largest private university in the United Arab emirates. As proof of our growing international reputation, UOW has been ranked as one of the top 200 universities in the world by The Times Higher Education Supplement World University Rankings 2006/2007.
The University's size fosters an intellectually challenging, yet inclusive culture that allows researchers to collaborate across disciplines. Renowned for applied research, UOW's approach is strengthened by effective partnerships with industry and other research and development institutions, both in Australia and overseas. UOW's ability to transform knowledge into action is moving into high-technology areas, with a particular focus on 15 research strengths.
The research culture at UOW provides an innovative learning environment for more than 22,800 undergraduate and postgraduate students from over 80 countries. A wide range of courses are available from 10 Faculties, including the new Graduate School of Medicine (GSM), which will focus on training doctors for practice in rural and remote areas. UOW also offers courses in conjunction with partner institutions in a number of offshore locations including Singapore, Malaysia, the United States and Hong Kong.
UOW has been recognised as one of the top Australian universities for excellence in teaching performance under the '2006 Learning and Teaching Performance Fund'. † In the 2007 Good Universities Guide, UOW received maximum 5-star ratings in seven categories, including Positive Graduate Outcomes; Getting a Job; Graduate Starting Salaries; and Staff Qualifications.
UOW's global outlook combines with our dynamic community relationships. Recently UOW won the inaugural 2006 Commonwealth University of the Year Award for Community Engagement from The Times Higher Education Supplement and the Association of Commonwealth Universities. An example of the UOW's commitment to regional growth can be seen with the Innovation Campus, a business and innovation hub set on a 33 hectare beachside site located at North Wollongong. This $300+ million development will ultimately create a community of some 5,000 people.
As an enterprising university with a personalised style, UOW is set to consolidate its position on the world stage, renowned for niche research areas and an innovative style of teaching.
