About Victoria University
Victoria University (VU) was established as a University in 1990, but its predecessor institutions date back to 1916. It is one of only eight Australian universities to combine higher education, and vocational and further education. It offers more than 700 courses, ranging from certificates and diplomas to degrees and doctorates.
VU has more than 42,000 enrolled students, including approximately 3,000 onshore international students, studying at 11 campuses and sites in Melbourne's Central Business District and western region. Partner institutes in China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Korea, New Zealand and Vietnam deliver VU programs in Asia to a further 7,000 students.
An innovator in interlinking its educational programs through pathways, recognition of prior learning, and innovative entry requirements, VU offers students a broad range of flexible study options.
The University's research is noted for advancing knowledge with practical outcomes, and for innovation in environmental issues, sport and health.
In 2007, VU articulated its future ambition: Making VU a New School of Thought. This vision drives the University's pursuit of industry and community engagement, and its search for innovative teaching and learning strategies. Future students will:
- do at least 25 percent of their assessment through learning in the workplace and/or in the community;
- be able to customise their learning experience;
- study programs that are informed by industry and community-focused roundtables that ensure teaching and learning stays relevant to a particular industry.
By VU's centenary in 2016, this vision will be a reality.
