Tuition fees - fee waivers and provider scholarships

Tuition fees

Tuition fees are paid by a non-Commonwealth supported (fee paying) student to their higher education provider for their course of study. It is important to be aware of the tuition fees and any other fees your provider may charge for your studies.

Determining tuition fees

Your higher education provider (provider) will set the tuition fee for each unit of study. Tuition fees for specific units of study may vary for different courses of study. Providers are required to publish their tuition fees for each unit of study and this information will be available on their website

Charges that are not tuition fees

Tuition fees do not include any of the following charges:

  • student union fees
  • charges for non-academic services
  • expenses for residential accommodation
  • charges for services incidental to studies

FEE-HELP is not available to cover these charges. You are responsible for paying them.

Tuition fees - fee waivers and provider scholarships

If you are a non-Commonwealth supported student you must pay a tuition fee for your course. Your provider cannot waive your tuition fees.

However your provider may grant you

  • an Exemption scholarship
  • a scholarship which pays all or part of your tuition fees

An exemption scholarship is awarded to you by your provider for a course of study. It makes you exempt from all student contribution amounts and tuition fees for units of study undertaken as part of that course.

These scholarships do not count as income under income tests for social security allowances, pensions, or ABSTUDY. You should ask your provider for information about the available scholarship programmes.
