Overview

The previous Australian Government introduced a loan scheme to assist students who are not enrolled in a Commonwealth supported place and are required to pay full fees.  FEE-HELP started on 1 January 2005.  A student who commenced their course of study before 2005 may be eligible for FEE-HELP.

FEE-HELP replaced the following loans schemes on 1 January 2005:

  • Postgraduate Education Loan Scheme (PELS);
  • Open Learning Deferred Payment Scheme (OLDPS); and
  • Bridging for Overseas-Trained Professionals Loan Scheme (BOTPLS).

FEE-HELP is a loan given to eligible fee-paying students to help pay part or all of their tuition fees.  FEE-HELP assists a greater range of students than previous loan schemes.  In particular, FEE-HELP is the first scheme to provide loans to students who are doing an undergraduate course of study.

Students who have not previously received a loan

Students who have not previously received a loan from the Australian Government to help pay the tuition fees for their course of study should use the following table to see if they may be eligible to receive FEE-HELP.

Citizenship/residencystatus FEE-HELP eligibility
Australian citizens  Eligible
Holders of a permanent humanitarian visa  Eligible
Holders of a permanent visa that is not a permanent humanitarian visa
Not eligible
New Zealand citizens  Not eligible
Overseas students Not eligible

If you may be eligible for FEE-HELP, you should seek full details on FEE-HELP.

Students who have previously received a loan

FEE-HELP has some features that differ from previous loan schemes. Students who have received a loan before 2005 to help pay part or all of the tuition fees for their study should find out how the changes affect them.

Students should also note that the previous Australian Government put in place special arrangements for some students who received a loan before 2005. Postgraduate students who received a loan before 2005 have the opportunity to complete their course under FEE-HELP even though they might not otherwise be eligible for FEE-HELP.
