The Indigenous Staff Scholarship (ISS) Program has been developed to provide Indigenous people who work in the higher education sector with opportunities for professional development.

Priority is given to Indigenous staff who:

  • are undertaking postgraduate awards and
  • have not previously received an ISS.

Indigenous Staff Scholarships (ISS) are awarded to academic or general Indigenous staff of a higher education provider to study with an eligible scholarship provider as specified in 46-15 of the Higher Education Support Act 2003 (HESA). Recipients may take leave of employment for 12 months to study full-time higher education study in their chosen academic or professional area.

The ISS targets Indigenous staff who actively encourage Indigenous students to participate in higher education and complete their studies.

Five national scholarships will be awarded each year.

What is covered by the ISS

The scholarships provide students with:
  • an annual stipend ($24,000 in 2010) and
  • payment of up to $12,000 in 2010 (indexed annually) tuition fees and/or student contribution amounts.

The tuition fee and/or student contribution amount will be paid directly to the administrating provider.  The administering provider will be responsible for making payments to the students
