Eligibility requirements

FEE-HELP is a loan available to eligible fee paying students to cover all or part of their tuition fees.

To be eligible for a FEE-HELP loan for a unit of study you must meet all the requirements and conditions given in the table.

fee paying student  You must be a domestic student studying in a non-Commonwealth supported place.

citizenship and residency   You must be:

  • an Australian citizen, or
  • the holder of a permanent humanitarian visa who will be resident in Australia for the duration of the unit, or
  • the holder of a permanent visa enrolled in a bridging course for overseas-trained professionals who will be resident in Australia for the duration of your course, or
  • a pre-2005 PELS student who is the holder of a permanent visa and meets the PELS eligibility requirements.

course and unit Your unit of study is a subject or unit which is:

  • part of a course of study leading to a higher education award,
  • made available by a higher education provider, access to which is provided through Open Universities Australia (formerly OLA),
  • part of a bridging course for overseas-trained professionals.

Note: You may also be eligible for FEE-HELP if you are undertaking a course to enable you to meet the requirements for entry into a course of study leading to a higher education award. Your provider can advise you if your enabling course is eligible for FEE-HELP.

FEE-HELP limit You must not have exceeded the FEE-HELP limit. The amount you still have left to borrow is your FEE-HELP balance. If your tuition fee exceeds your FEE-HELP balance you can only get a loan equal to your balance. You will need to pay the rest.

enrolment conditions
 
You must be enrolled in the unit of study on the census date.

Request for FEE-HELP assistance form  You must:
  • provide your Tax File Number (TFN) or Certificate of application for a TFN form
  • complete, sign and submit a Request for FEE-HELP assistance form.

 

You must do these things by the census date to be entitled to FEE-HELP.

FEE-HELP eligibility: previous higher education studies

Any previous higher education study you have undertaken does not affect your eligibility for FEE-HELP.

FEE-HELP eligibility: existing debts, income & assets

Your eligibility for FEE-HELP is not affected by your income and assets. However once your income is above the minimum repayment threshold you will have to commence repayments of your FEE-HELP debt.
