Scholarship amounts and indexation

In 2008 the value of a Commonwealth Scholarship (CS) will be:

  • Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarship (CECS) - $2,162 a year
  • Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarship (CAS) - $4,324 a year
  • Indigenous Access Scholarship (IAS) - $4,080

These amounts will be indexed annually.




Receiving payments

Your higher education provider (provider) will make all scholarship payments directly to you. You will not receive any CS payment before the census date in each study period, with the exception of IAS recipients. The census dates are generally 30 March and 31 August each year.

Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarship payments

Your provider will make two payments to you each year. These are:

  • one payment totalling 50% of the annual value of your scholarship in the first half of the year
  • one payment totalling 50% of the annual value of your scholarship in the second half of the year.

Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarship payments

Your provider will make two payments to you each year. These are:

  • one payment totalling 50% of the annual value of your scholarship in the first half of the year
  • one payment totalling 50% of the annual value in the second half of the year.

Indigenous Access Scholarship payments

Your provider will make one payment up to 50% of the value of the scholarship which will be made to you as soon as practicable after you have accepted the offer of the scholarship.  Your provider will pay the remaining amount as soon as practicable after your first census date, or within six weeks after your first census date, provided you maintain enrolment and meet the other eligibility criteria at your first census date.

Indigenous Enabling Scholarship payments

Your provider will make a payment to you.  One payment totalling 50% of the value of the scholarship will be made as soon as practicable, or within six weeks after your first course start date.  The remaining 50% payment will be made in the six-month period following your first course start date provided you meet all of the relevant eligibility criteria.


For enabling courses that are six-months or less in duration, you will only receive 50% of the value of the scholarship.
