You are eligible to be Commonwealth supported for a unit of study if, among other things, you:
- enrol in the unit on or before the census date and remain enrolled at the end of the census date (see Census dates);
- submit a completed Request for Commonwealth support and HECS-HELP form on or before the census date to your higher education provider (see Request for Commonwealth support and HECS-HELP form);
- meet the citizenship or residency requirements (see Meeting the citizenship or residency requirements); and
- have sufficient Student Learning Entitlement to cover the unit in which you are enrolling (unless the unit consists wholly of work experience in industry or forms part of an enabling course of study – ask your provider)
Being eligible for a Commonwealth supported place is not a guarantee that you will be offered a place. Your provider is responsible for allocating Commonwealth supported places based on merit and is required to let you know, in writing, whether you have been offered one. You are not a Commonwealth supported student unless you have received this advice from your provider (which may be in respect of a particular unit or a course of study (covering all units in the course)). If you do not wish to be a Commonwealth supported student in relation to a particular unit, you must notify the appropriate officer of your provider, in writing, on or before the census date for the unit (see Can I choose not to be Commonwealth supported?)
