Changes to BOTPLS

On 1 January 2005 the Bridging for Overseas-Trained Professionals Loan Scheme (BOTPLS) was replaced by the FEE-HELP. FEE-HELP provides a loan to overseas trained professionals who are undertaking a bridging course to enable them to meet the requirements for entry to their profession in Australia.

The FEE-HELP eligibility criteria for bridging courses for overseas-trained professionals (BOTP courses) are the same as under BOTPLS, except that the FEE-HELP limit applies.

FEE-HELP eligibility

You are eligible for FEE-HELP if you are:
  • enrolled in a bridging course for overseas-trained professionals (BOTP)
  • an Australian citizen or holder of a permanent visa who is resident in Australia for the duration of your course
  • meet the other eligibility criteria for FEE-HELP.

Loan fees and charges

FEE-HELP loans for bridging courses for overseas-trained professionals are not subject to a loan fee.

Like current BOTPLS debts, outstanding FEE-HELP debts will be indexed to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) each year to maintain their real value.

Repayments

You will be required to make compulsory repayments on your FEE-HELP loan once your income exceeds the minimum repayment threshold.
