Are you enrolling in a course of study at a higher education provider in 2007 and your provider has advised you that you will be Commonwealth supported?
If yes, you must read this publication and you should keep it for reference throughout the year. It contains important information on your obligations as a Commonwealth supported student. |
If you are a fee-paying student (a non-Commonwealth supported student), you should read the FEE-HELP information 2007 booklet.
Important things to remember:
- You must complete and submit a Request for Commonwealth support and HECS-HELP form to your higher education provider on or before the census date (or an earlier date set by your provider) for your first unit of study contributing to your course of study (see Census dates & Request for Commonwealth support and HECS-HELP form).
- The following points apply to your first and all subsequent units of study throughout your course:
- You must have enough Student Learning Entitlement (SLE) to cover the unit(s) in which you are enrolled as a Commonwealth supported student (see Meeting the Student Learning Entitlement requirements – Can I enrol in units of study at different higher education providers?).
- If you are eligible for HECS-HELP, you must provide your tax file number or pay 80% of your student contribution up-front to your provider on or before the census date (or an earlier date set by your provider) (see What are my payment options under HECS-HELP?).
- If you are NOT eligible for HECS-HELP, you must pay your student contribution up-front, in full, to your higher education provider on or before the census date (or an earlier date set by your provider) (see How do I pay my student contribution?).
- If you have submitted a Request for Commonwealth support and HECS-HELP form and remain enrolled at the end of the census date, you will use your SLE. If you have requested a HECS HELP loan, provided your tax file number (or Certificate of application), and not paid 80% of your student contribution up front, you will incur a HECS-HELP debt (even if you have not attended any classes) (see Census Dates, What are my payment options under HECS-HELP, or Withdrawal or non-completion of studies).).
- To avoid incurring a HECS-HELP debt or using your SLE, you must follow your provider’s withdrawal procedures on or before the census date (Withdrawal or non-completion of studies).

Be aware of the census date for your units of study, and any earlier date that your provider has set for finalising your payment arrangements.
If you fail to meet your obligations by the end of the censs date your provider must cancel your enrolment as a Commonwealth supported student. |
